News ReleaseFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: KnowMap's Xenia Stanford Appointed as a Dean of Socrates AcademyCalgary, Alberta - Xenia Stanford, President of Stanford Solutions Inc; Founder and Editor-in-Chief, KnowMap: The Knowledge Management, Auditing and Mapping Magazine has been named one of the founding deans of the Socrates Academy. "She will represent the Canada and USA Region of this global academy", says John Hibbs, Founder and Director of the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Global Education, the driving force behind the Academy. Hibbs states: "The purpose of the Academy is to award Socrates Prizes for significant achievement in education. The ultimate goal of this membership group is to do for education what the Oscars do for the movies and for educators what the Olympics does for athletes. The first Socrates Prizes will be awarded during Global Learn Day VII, October 12, 2003." "She is a remarkable person with a nearly inexhaustible supply of energy and good will," continues Hibbs on his reason for her appointment as Dean. Stanford also was recognized for her dedication in promoting education and her contributions to Global Learn Day, an annual live 24-hour non-stop event that connects educators and students around the world in interactive simultaneous telephone and Internet connections. Global Learn Day is the largest conference of its kind and free to participants. It is sponsored through many learning institutions, government and industries to promote communication, understanding and learning, opening opportunities to many who would not otherwise be able to join in an international event. It opens at midnight Greenwich Mean Time in the South Pacific and travels west through all 24 time zones, at each stop showcasing those doing exceptional work in distance education and Internet technology. It concludes 24 hours later also in the South Pacific. Every time zone, every continent, many countries and island nations
are represented in Global Learn Day. To prepare for this event many
computers are donated to students in third-world nations so they can
join in that day and continue to use them for learning purposes afterwards.
Other areas where computers are not possible are linked through satellite
to radios and television sets. Scientists from Antarctica joined in
the 2001 event, once by ham radio. Through Deans like Stanford, Dr. Neil Hynd of Abu Dhabi, Dr. Boris
Sedunov of Russia, Dr. Cristiana Assumpçáo of Brazil and
Dr. José Brenes of Costa Rica, the work of those promoting learning
programs in impoverished nations will be recognized through the Socrates
Academy awards program. The Socrates Academy and its awards program will be formally announced
in Melbourne, Australia, March 25-27, 2002. Benjamin Franklin Institute of Global Education, founded by John Hibbs,
