The WarRoom Guide to Competitive Intelligence

Steven M. Shaker, and Mark P. Gembicki
New York: McGraw-Hill. 1998.

A former Central Intelligence Agency officer, Steven M. Shaker, and a former National Security Agency officer, Mark P. Gembicki, collaborate to show how tactics used by military and other strategists in planning defensive and offensive battles can be applied to the business setting. For example, those who have participated in or observed the locker room mapping by sports teams can understand why the authors demonstrate these techniques as well as others in making an organization competitive in the current marketplace, which has become a literal war zone.

The WarRoom Guide to Competitive Intelligence

This book is not an easy read and has received mixed reviews from those in the competitive intelligence and knowledge management fields. Complaints of the soon to be outdated Cyber Collection and questioning of some of the stealth ethics are among aspects that make knowledgeable readers leery of some parts of the book.

However, like the saying about hypnosis, the authors cannot force you to act against your inner will. There is still much solid wisdom like the digital war room tactics, monitoring means to keep on top of complex projects, visualization methods, understanding body language and corporate security strategies that makes this book a worthwhile tool in the hands of corporate strategists, competitive intelligence and knowledge management practitioners.
